There will be a fundraising effort on Aug. 7th, called Snazzy Shoes & Swingin’ Skirts, Dancing to the Big Band Hits. It will be held at the Rainwater Conference Center; starting at 7:30 PM. Advance tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple. Call for details: 249-4100.

*Terri Whitlock/ American Red Cross: Their Annual meeting was yesterday. The year in review, included 70 fire cases, 2000 trainings, 200 military aided, & 20 educational fairs were held. Hurricane season is here, everyone is advised to be prepared. On July 10th, there will be a boot drive, held in conjunction with the Boy Scouts & the Fire Department. On Aug. 7th, the Low Country Boil will take place at the Holiday Inn on Hill Ave. On Aug. 26, there will be a golf tournament at Francis Lake. Call for details on any of the above: 242-7404.

*Dennis Marks/ Rotary/ Lowndes County Democratic Party: Dennis’s year as President of the Rotary is over, but he continues as a member. He reminded members that the “Imagination Library” project is ongoing for children in the area under the age of 5 years old. The annual LCDP Barbeque is going on tonight (July 1). Many candidates were to be there. Hopefully you had the opportunity to be there. On Aug. 14th, the State Convention will be held in Athens, starting at 9:00 AM & ending with a dinner that evening.

*Harriet Messcher/ LAMP: The Dinner for 8 was a success, raising about $2000. Sydney & Sharon Morris won the grand prize. In the Miller Hardware/ Seasons drawing, Stuart Mullis was the grand prize winner. Contrary to the article in the paper, the Fresh Start program is not sponsored by LAMP & they make only a determination with the applications received. They are not responsible for the distribution of funds. It is also known now that any approved funds go to the vendor, not the individual who completed the application. Concern at LAMP is the negative publicity & it was suggested that a Letter to the Editor be written to clarify misconceptions.

*Gretchen Quarterman/ LAKE: Gretchen continues to look out for EPA/EPD issues in our area. She mentioned the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico & how we must protect our lands where we live. The environment is something we all have to be concerned about.

*Cheryl Oliver/ Turner Center for the Arts: As the Treasurer for the VCR, she told us that the account at Regions Bank had finally been closed & that a new account was opened at the Bank of Valdosta. Children’s art classes are ongoing & there are some scholarships available for deserving children. July 12th, there will be a Special Reception to celebrate the City of Valdosta’s 150th year. This will be held from 5-7 PM. If you haven’t voted for the People’s Choice Photo Contest winner, you have a little while longer to do so. Announcement of the winners will be held on the 12th. On July 29th, there will be a Wine Glass Design Class, from 7-9 PM. This is for adults only & there is a $25 fee.

*Jane Osborn:  You still have time to see the presentations being put on by the PSST! The shows are all getting rave reviews. On the first Sat. of each month, through Oct., you can go to the Farmer’s Market in Homerville, from 9-1:00. There are Car Seat Classes held monthly at the Lowndes County Health Dept. Check the schedule at 245-2343. First Friday Downtown is tomorrow night, July 2nd. Attend & support the downtown merchants & restaurants.

*Leslie Jacobs/Jacobs’ Ladder: Three weeks of summer camp in June were successful. July finds us in need of more volunteers for Saturday mornings 8:30 – noon. Eight riders from Jacobs’ Ladder are preparing for the Special Olympics Horse Show in August. The dates are Aug. 20-22, in Perry, GA. If you can volunteer some time, please call Leslie for details; 794-1188.

*Jenna Lasseter/ The Haven: She asked that this information be passed along - They are having a fundraiser at Longhorn’s on July 12th, between 4 – 10 PM. Call The Haven for details, or to get a voucher. Your dining at Longhorn’s will benefit The Haven, as 10% of your check will go to them.

That concludes the minutes for this month. We’ll hope to see you on Thursday, August 5th, at Hildegards.

Leslie Jacobs,

Secretary
