Nathan Deal coming to Valdosta on May Day

The “right to work” governor of Georgia is visiting Valdosta and Lowndes County on May Day, which is a worker’s holiday many other places.

According to the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, 2012 State Legislative Luncheon 05/01/12 – 05/01/12,

The Chamber’s annual state legislative luncheon will feature Governor Nathan Deal, who will share highlights from the 2012 Legislative Session. Hosting the Gov. along with the Chamber is Sen. Tim Golden and Reps. Ellis Black, Amy Carter, and Jason Shaw.

Registration is $25 for Chamber members and $40 for all others. Chamber members can purchase a corporate table for ten for $250. Attendees must register by noon on April 20.

In many countries May Day is a holiday celebrating workers’ rights. Georgia is a “right to work” state (translation: workers can be fired at any time for any reason), and the Chamber promotes that:

Decatur County newspaper wants more prisoners who compete with local wo rkers

The Decatur County newspaper brags about prisoners competing with free labor, while helping try to attract another prison.

Brennan Leathers wrote for the Post-Searchlight 3 January 2010, Walls going up at new ag building,

Work on Decatur County’s new agricultural office building is quickly progressing, with interior walls being put up and the installation of a roof soon to follow.

Decatur County Prison inmates with carpentry and construction experience were working hard last Friday, putting up the interior walls inside the 9,724-square-foot building under construction near the Cloud Agricultural Building off Vada Road.

Which means some local workers with carpentry and construction experience were not working on that project.

Do we want a private prison in Lowndes County so more prisoners can compete with local workers here, too? If you don’t think so, remember CCA says community opposition can impede private prison site selection. Here’s a petition urging the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority to stop the CCA private prison.

  • Green and open spaces can provide environmental amenities for free
  • If green spaces contribute to quality of life, you attract people and jobs to community
Note and jobs, not just people: jobs so the people can work and afford the houses they live in.

The Valdosta Daily Times Article on Aug 11 that read; “Order in the Court, a look at the Lowndes County Court House.” It highlighted the history and benefits of the old 1905 Lowndes County Court House but did not address diversity, gender, and who mostly benefited through employment from building this new facility.
