Update 2025-02-10: Packet: 4 Lowndes County rezonings @ GLPC 2025-01-27.

The most contentious item at the recent GLPC meeting, at almost half an hour, was 8. CU-2025-02 Perma-Fix of South Georgia 1612 James P Rodgers Circle. Several people spoke against it, including Gretchen Quarterman at 14 minutes. The Planning Commissioners voted 4:5 to recommend denying that Conditional Use application, but then they voted 5:4 to recommend approving.

The Greater Lowndes Planning Commission (GLPC) merely advises. The actual decision will be at the Thursday, February 6, Valdosta City Council (VCC) meeting. Valdosta has no agenda posted yet for that meeting:

Thanks to Matt Martin, City Planner for Valdosta and Hahira, for sending their board packet materials for tonight’s Greater Lowndes Planning Commission (GLPC) meeting at 5:30 PM.

This Valdosta case, 8. CU-2025-02 Perma-Fix of South Georgia (1612 James P Rodgers Circle) CUP for a Solid Waste Transfer Station in M-2 zoning, is for Perma-Fix to resume processing hazardous waste like it was doing seven years ago when it burned. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA-EPD) has already approved it.

And is there a rare case for which staff recommends denial: 9. VA-2025-01 James Warren (202 Denmark Street) Rezone 0.73 acres from R-6 to C-C.

Packet: 2 Lowndes, 8 Valdosta, 1 Hahira @ GLPC 2024-10-28

The Loch Winn Farms subdivision rezoning on Loch Laurel Road, long delayed due to the Planning Commission not meeting because of lack of quorum and then hurricane, plus in between being tabled by the Lowndes County Commission waiting on Planning Commission review, finally got that on Monday, October 28, 2024.

[Collage @ GLPC Packet 2024-10-28]

GLPC also heard a new Lowndes County case, REZ-2024-17 Evans Property, Bemiss Rd., 0145B 100, ~1.4 acres, R-1 to C-H, “to allow the property to be used at its highest and best potential.”

Plus six Valdosta cases from the previous month’s GLPC agenda, and one new Valdosta case (a church) and one new Hahira case (a parking lot for a restaurant).

There are no LAKE videos of this GLPC meeting, because Gretchen was out of state as was jsq.

You may wonder, as I do, why doesn’t Lowndes County video it? Or why doesn’t Valdosta do facebook live, like for Valdosta City Council meetings?

Maybe you’d like to ask that Commission and that Council those questions.

Here is the agenda: Continue reading

One Lowndes County Case, six Valdosta cases @ GLPC 2024-09-30

One of the two county cases from the lack-of-quorum GLPC cancellation last month is back on the agenda for tomorrow evening. The other former case was passed anyway by the Lowndes County Commission, without GLPC review.

The six Valdosta cases are new, and are all for small rezonings or the like.

Here is the agenda. Assuming the meeting actually happens despite hurricane damage.

The board packet materials, recieved in response to a LAKE open records request, are on the LAKE website.

Deannexation east of Withlacoochee River linked to subdivision west @ GLPC 2021-07-26

What does a big parcel of flood plain property on the east (left) bank of the Withlacoochee River have to do with a subdivision to the west, both on the agenda for this Monday’s Greater Lowndes Planning Commission?

Well, both seem to have been requested by the same person, who is also somehow involved with the owner of the land in between.

What do the various LLCs and people involved want to do with hundreds of acres of floodplain next to the Withlacoochee River? They probably can’t build subdivisions on it, but they could log it, dig sand mines, put a shooting range there, or many other possibilities that might not be good for the river or nearby homeowners.

I have filed an open records request with Lowndes County so we can find out more.

Let’s start with the Valdosta deannexation case:

City of Valdosta Cases:

  1. VA-2021-16 Uvalde Land Co. (Cherry Creek — Withlacoochee River) Deannex 310 acres from the City of Valdosta

Videos: Bonds, Val Del Road, GLPC appointments, 1/2 million to Motorola @ LCC 2019-09-10

The longest item at 2:23 was the Val Del Road rezoning case, for which one Commissioner recused himself. The others passed it unanimously.

Second longest was the GLPC appointments. No surprise, Ed Hightower was reappointed, and the second appointment was….

Third longest was the Chairman’s unscheduled recognition of Leadership Lowndes and advertisement for a 9/11 ceremony. If he’s going to do this every time, maybe it could be put on the agenda.

Below are links to each LAKE video of each agenda item, with Continue reading

Videos: Surprise Bonds, Val Del rezoning, GLPC appointments, 1/2 million to Motorola @ LCC 2019-09-09

Apparently more was shown on the screen yesterday morning that we finally received this morning in the board packet, such as this picture of the Nelson Hill subdivision on Val Del Road.

They also added 7.b. Refunding Revenue Bonds by South Region Joint Development Authority for VSU ASRE, which makes no sense until you can see details in the board packet.

After the agenda items, the Chairman made unscheduled announcements of a Continue reading

After four days, but before the Commission votes at 5:30 PM in its Regular Session this evening, the county sent the packet, at 10:50 AM this morning. Three is more than the statutory 3 days in the Georgia Open Records Act (GORA). The packet is on the LAKE website.

Now we can see who are the applicants to the Planning Commission.

Val Del Road rezoning, GLPC appointments, and half a million to Motorola @ LCC 2019-09-09

Two new GLPC members, half a million dollars to Motorola for some unexplained acronym, and the Val Del Road rezoning, which breezed through the preceding Planning Commission meeting with no opposition, is on the agenda for the Work Session Monday morning and the voting session Tuesday evening of the Lowndes County Commission.
