Candidates Qualified for City Elections in Lowndes County, GA

Every Valdosta City Council seat up for election is contested, a couple of Valdosta School Board seats, one Hahira City Council seat, and five people are running for four Lake Park City Council seats.

Although this is a nonpartisan election, all candidates are invited to speak tonight at the Lowndes County Democratic Party (LCDP) monthly meeting, 6PM Monday 14 September 2015, at Mama June’s Home Cookin’, 3286 Inner Perimeter Rd., Valdosta, GA. Around 20 of them will speak, so here’s your first opportunity to hear directly from most of the candidates.

Here’s the list of candidates who qualified for this election, according to the Lowndes County Board of Elections, formatted the way they sent it. Continue reading

Nancy Parrott (1934-2015)

Dean Poling, VDT, 17 June 2015, Hahira’s ‘first lady’ a friend to all,

Even in the years after her late husband stopped being this Lowndes County town’s mayor, Nancy Parrott remained the first lady of Hahira until her passing last weekend.

She was known for her smile, her wit, her grace and her always having a kind word. She never saw station. She saw people.

She died Sunday. She was 80 years old….

2013 Obituary of Dr. J. Lyle Parrott.

Obituary, VDT, 15 June 2015, Nancy Rutledge Wainer Parrott,

Nancy Rutledge Wainer Parrott, 80, of Hahira, Ga., widow of Jesse Lyle Parrott, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at her home surrounded by her two sons and her “daughters-in-love.”

Videos: Baseball and water; electric sign withdrawn @ ZBOA 2015-04-07

They’re meeting again today, and last month the baseball diamond west of Hahira was approved with conditions 4-1. The water connection variance on Jumping Gully Road, was approved 5-0, and the electric company parking variance on Norman Drive, tabled the previous month, was withdrawn by applicant (before the meeting), all according to ZBOA’s own Summary of Results.

See also the agenda for the 7 April 2015 Zoning Board of Appeals meeting. Here’s the LAKE video of the meeting:

Baseball and water; electric sign withdrawn @ ZBOA 2015-04-07

Today at 2:30 PM, the owner of the baseball diamond west of Hahira is not expected to appear, because he’s working. If you want to see him, try Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York, tomorrow evening. There’s a water connection variance on Jumping Gully Road, and the electric company parking variance on Norman Drive in Valdosta tabled last month has been withdrawn.

Here’s the agenda, which oddly is not yet on the City of Valdosta website. Continue reading

Sunshine for local government

We’ve got a little list, a spreadsheet as a list,
please don’t take this as a diss, we think they have been missed….

Unlike Ko-Ko’s in the Mikado, this list is of things previously missed that are slowly being found (or created), so local governments can tell the citizens what fine things they’ve been up to, and so citizens can decide what they need to deal with and what topics they can provide input on. Here’s the LAKE sunshine list for local government.

The Lowndes County Commission just got some additions, with its new website, by posting videos of its own meetings, and by posting agendas and minutes for the Planning Commission.

The Valdosta City Council does pretty well, with its website, its agendas and minutes, and the agendas and summaries and minutes for ZBOA. Valdosta does not (yet) video and post its own meetings, but it does have what appears to be a complete list of its ordinances with links to their text. Dasher also has its ordinances online.

Meanwhile the Lowndes County Commission has only Continue reading

Videos: County withdrew Lake Alapaha, Hahira dwelling approved, Solar tabled in Valdosta @ ZBOA 2014-09-09

Withdrawn: the county’s never-ending no-bid Alapaha Water Treatment plant. Tabled: Dr. Urbonas’ solar parking variance because if he connects the structures to his building maybe they don’t need a variance.

Approved: a single-family design variance near Hahira an accessory structure near Valdosta, and a sign variance in Valdosta.

Here’s the agenda, with results added from the meeting summary, followed by a video playlist.

VDT Open Government Symposium: in Macon?

Yay open government symposium! But why in Macon, why not in Valdosta, if it’s organized by the new VDT editor? Sure, Macon is the geographic center of the state, but it’s only about an hour from Atlanta, and one thing most people in Atlanta don’t understand is how big Georgia is, so asking them to drive four hours to Valdosta would be educational for them. And if the VDT is so interested in government transparency, why doesn’t it investigate the county’s lawsuit against local business Deep South Sanitation at the expense of the local taxpayers that benefits nobody but “exclusive franchise” ADS and its investors in New York City? Why is the VDT’s front page story that gave a platform for Spectra’s Andrea Grover no longer online, especially now that the Sabal Trail deadline she announced has been busted? Let’s see the VDT lead the way. Here’s a first test: Gretchen is going to Macon with the LAKE video camera. Will the VDT let her video?

Hahira Honeybee Breakfast

300x225 food line, in Hahira Honeybee Breakfast, by Gretchen Quarterman, 29 September 2014 Gretchen reports it was congenial but poorly attended, presumably because there are no local political races undecided that affect Hahira: both County Commission Districts 2 and 5 are already done, and there’s no county Chairman or Sheriff race, and no Hahira city races this year. The only Hahira City Council member there was Terry Benjamin, although Police Chief Terry Davis and City Manager Jonathan Sumner were there, plus Wayne Bullard, who according to Hahira’s website is still Mayor.

Many more events upcoming in the Hahira Honeybee Festival. Continue reading
