supporting GA HR 158 to stop state fee diversions,
and another
supporting the Withlacoochee and Little River Water Trail.
Two days before I spoke about both and there was discussion at the Hahira Work Session of January 30, 2018.
Another item from that Work Session has unfortunately become big news: possibly closing the Lawson Street railroad crossing, where a man was killed February 5 when a Norfolk Southern train struck a dump truck, according to WTXL. WALB says, “The Georgia State Patrol identified the driver as Dexter Brown, 48, of Barnwell, S.C.”. In an outbreak of transparency and due diligence in the last Lowndes County Commission of 2017,
they took ten minutes
replacing Mary Goodman
on the
Industrial Authority,
hearing from three nominees, and appointing Brad Folsom.
They took three and a half minutes to choose among three nominees
to the
Tourism Authority
to appoint
Robert Jefferson.
None of those nominees spoke, but the vote was so split
they actually had a runoff, which ended in a 3:2 final vote.
They also reappointed Joyce Evans by silent “acclamation”.
Leadership Lowndes spoke for 12 minutes (as long as three citizens get), citizen Willie Mae Jones wanted to know what next to get her Black Road paved, and County Engineer Mike Fletcher said the signatures were verified as 84% of the property owners on the road, so it would go on the paving list with the 74 projects already on there. Chairman Bill Slaughter actually asked for Commissioner comments, and each of them said a few words, mostly thanks to the staff and Merry Christmas. Chairman Bill Slaughter even thanked citizens for coming to the meetings. Merry Christmas, Commissioners!

Georgia Beer Company’s website says “We are not open for business yet”, but its contact page says “Say hello to the first Georgia brewery in Valdosta.” They also have a facebook page. Neither of which says where they will be located. So, VLCIA, in one of your numerous mostly-empty business parks, or elsewhere?
Looks like GA Beer Co. had a kickstarter fundraiser a couple of years ago, which says they all met at VSU.
Presumably this is the same Community and Economic Development Strategy recently approved by the Lowndes County Commission.

Julia Shewchuk updated January 19 2018: “The regular meeting of the DSSWA has been rescheduled from January 17, 2018 to Wednesday, February 7, 2018.” The agenda is the same before rescheduling, as below.

Two cases, both contentious because neighbors blew them in for code violations. Joshua Stevens of Wendover Road, according to pictures submitted by neighbor Franklin J. Richards II, built a building eight inches from another building. “Staff Recommendation: Find inconsistent with the Variance Fteview Criteria and deny the requests.”
Deep South Sanitation (DSS) of Tucker Road apparently has been using a neighboring lot as a staging area for trash trucks without permit approval, and there’s a complaint by Steve Edwards of Evergreen Landfill. If I’m not mistaken, Evergreen Landfill is owned by Advanced Disposal Services (ADS), and this would appear to be the same Steve Edwards who has repeatedly spoken for ADS. Probably many readers recall, Lowndes County sued DSS on behalf of ADS all the way to the Georgia Supreme Court before finally coming up with a Solid Waste Ordinance that allows two trash collection services to co-exist in Lowndes County.
