Update 2025-02-11: Lowndes County Considers Opting Out of House Bill 581 @ LCC Public Hearing 2025-02-10.

Commissioner Joyce Evans will rotate back into the Vice Chair position. On January 28, 2025, the Lowndes County Commission also reappointed to the Valdosta-Lowndes County Land Bank Authority.

In a break with tradition, the incumbent was not reappointed as a Tax Assessor. Gretchen Quarterman, the incumbent (although technically not, since the County Commission did not do reappointments before her term expired at the end of 2024) got a nomination and two votes. James Michael (Mike) Tanner also got a nommination and two votes. Commissioner Scottie Orenstein was not present for that item, since he came in late. That left Chairman Bill Slaughter to break the tie, and he voted for Tanner.

The previous morning, Commissioner Demarcus Marshall said he wanted to ask questions of the applicants for 6.a. Appointment to the Board of Tax Assessors. Chairman Bill Slaughter said they weren’t doing that in the Work Session because both applications were not there, but they can do it in the Regular Session Tuesday.

Mike Tanner did not attend the Regular Session. Gretchen Quarterman was there as usual, videoing the meeting.

The voted on the added agenda item, 8.d. Publish the intent to opt out of HB 581, to do that. That item and all the others were approved unanimously, except as noted above.

Lowndes County Commission Meets Tuesday Evening

According to the Lowndes County Tax Assessor’s Office, the 9.18 acres at 4097 Cat Creek Road are owned by Narvel R. Briggs of 243 Park Street, Somerset, NJ 08873 with no sales on that land reported since 1982. I would guess this is not a big developer, rather a child of the original owner.

GA SB16: Lowndes County Commission Expansion

Georgia Senate Bill 16 Lowndes County; provide for a board of commissioners; powers and composition has passed the House on Feb 10th and the Senate on Feb 28th and is now waiting for the governor to sign it. Here’s the summary:
A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend and supersede the laws pertaining to the governing authority of Lowndes County; to provide for a Board of Commissioners of Lowndes County; to provide for the powers and composition of the board of commissioners; to provide for election districts, qualifications, terms of office, and filling of vacancies of commissioners; to provide for meetings and quorum; to provide for the responsibilities of the chairperson; to provide for a vice chairperson and the vice chairperson’s responsibilities; to provide for submission pursuant to Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended; to provide for severability and effective dates; to provide for the repeal of existing enabling legislation; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

Lowndes County Commission Meeting Tonight

The Lowndes County Commission meets tonight:

They represent the entire county (including the cities).

Their mission statement:

To provide an efficient, effective and responsive local government to all citizens of Lowndes County while maintaining the financial strength to meet any contingency
Anyone can stand up in the Citizens Wishing to Be Heard section of the agenda and say what’s on their mind. Say who you are, where you live, and be brief and polite.

Monday Commission Work Session Cancelled

I just got a call from the county saying Monday’s morning work session of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners is cancelled due to lack of items. This happened a month ago, as well.

The regular public meeting is still on for Tuesday 22 June at 5:30 PM at 325 W. Savannah Ave. (under the water tower). The agenda does seem a mite slim: no rezoning cases, no ULDC changes. Still, there’s Citizens Wishing to be Heard. I’ll be there.

Against Lowndes County Commission Expansion: Dennis Marks

Here is one person’s opinion on the current expansion plan for the Lowndes County Commission. LAKE is also making available a web page and an OpenOffice version of this statement.

LAKE will be happy to post other opinions on either side as part of citizen dialog for transparent process.

Vote NO on Expansion Referendum

Voters in Lowndes County are being asked in a referendum to vote YES or NO on expansion of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners by the addition of two super-districts:
Shall the governing authority of Lowndes County be changed to a six-member board of commissioners to be composed of a nonvoting chairperson and five voting district commissioners, three of whom shall represent the existing three districts created by dividing Lowndes County into three districts and two of whom shall represent additional districts to be created by dividing Lowndes County into two districts which shall overlay the three existing districts?
