Conversation for jobs —Cristobal Serran-Pagan @ VCC 7 April 2011

Dr. Serran-Pagan suggests we have a conversation among all types of people and do the math. Let’s put the money where it will produce jobs. Solar, wind, why haven’t we been doing it? Real clean renewable sources of energy. He brings up the water the biomass plant would use.
Water is precious. Air is precious. Oil, coal, is not precious. Biomass is not precious. We have plenty of good clean, renewable sources of energy. Let’s do that…. and get rid of old models, and let’s try to do what is right for community, for our economy, and for public interest.

Here’s the video:

About those minutes —Bobbi Anne Hancock @ VLCIA 19 April 2011

Stonewalling is a good way to get your Industrial Authority on the front page of the local newspaper (again). Here’s video of what Bobbi Anne Hancock said to the board about their minutes (and other things).

First, here’s is VDT reporter David Rodock’s excerpt of what she said last night:

Bobbi Anne Hancock, the woman who made an Open Records request with the Authority for meeting minutes from 2006 to the present day, spoke to board members during the citizens to be heard portion of the meeting.

“The majority of your costs for the request are for the five hours

Protesters at Industrial Authority, 19 April 2011

The protesters are revolting these days! Is there nothing an Industrial Authority can do to keep them off its doorstep?

Where are these people protesting? Could it be outside the Industrial Authority?

Thanks for clean up after recent storm —Dan Davis @ VCC 7 April 2011

Dan Davis thanks Valdosta City staff for timely clean up after recent storm. This plus there were two scheduled items related to storm and flood damage. Maybe we need better planning to reduce sprawl and the resulting flooding.

Here’s the video:

Barry Hyatt @ VCC 7 April 2011

He was a metallurgical engineer (he spelled that for them) in Pittsburgh. People there were glad of the jobs, but the air is bad now. He said that air quality is important, and biomass is a detriment to the community. He reminds the council that they were elected to become involved.

Dr. Mark P. George wants a conversation @ VCC 7 April 2011

The mayor prefaced a comment that he’s read (apparently in this blog) that he’s been criticized for not paying attention while people are speaking. He clarified that he’s often taking notes. Then Dr. Mark P. George spoke, wondering when people would get answers to their more substantive questions.
I have an attorney. These folks have an attorney. He’s sitting right there.

Dr. George amplified the not paying attention comments by adding in body language, and saying he did appreciate taking notes. He asked if the meeting is recorded. Mayor Fretti answered yes.

Dr. George remarked:

It seems to me you are now cloaking the lack of response in legalities.

Legality does not equal morality.

Council Sonny Vickers remarked that he already told everyone he is for the biomass plant.

Dr. George recommended conversation, following up on new information.

The mayor asked Dr. George to wrap up. Dr. George responded:

There really is no end.

Valdosta Downtown Farm Days —Mara Register

Mara Register came to the Lowndes County Commission regular meeting to talk about Downtown Valdosta Farm Days, following up from the Farm Days organizational meeting Monday.

I think her main points were:

  1. Provide additional information about healthy eating with food from local farmers, thus helping solve the epidemic of childhood obesity in Georgia.
  2. Economic development opportunity for small farmers.
  3. Promote downtown district.
When? The Saturday after First Friday and the Saturday after Art After Dark.

Where? The parking spaces around the historic courthouse.

No livestock. Local produce. Here’s video of the first part of what she said.

Farm Days: Connecting Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta

Yesterday I wrote that interactions about Valdosta Farm Days between the Lowndes Commmission and the City of Valdosta “could have been smoother if one or both of the parties had been proactive.” The VDT reported that the County Commission wants to know about Valdosta Farm Days, and apparently there was a disconnect between the staff and the Commissioners. Here’s how the Commission came to be informed, through interactions of citizens and staff.

First, an excerpt from the paper paper story by David Rodock, “Farmers market proposal discussed by commission”, Tuesday, April 12, 2011, page 3A (it’s not online): Continue reading

T-SPLOST Executive Committee —Ashley Paulk of LCC at LCDP (Part 2)

He says there’s a lot more to learn, T-SPLOST has got a good regional executive committee, etc., but:
Right now, I do not have a good or warm fuzzy feeling about this. That could change.
And previously he said if it did change, he would come back and tell us about it.

That was Ashley Paulk, Chairman of the Lowndes County Commission (LCC), talking at the Lowndes County Democratic Party (LCDP) monthly meeting about T-SPLOST.

Here’s the video:
