Commissioner Scottie Orenstien wanted to know did they own the land: yes. Would they connect to county water and sewer? yes. Lowndes County Utilities Director affirmed that the county already has the necessary infrastructure for them to connect to.

Commissioner Demarcus Marshall wanted to be sure the tax discount came from the state, not from the county. It’s apparently 2.8% over ten years. Both the GM and County Chairman Bill Slaughter thought the net would end up positive for the tax base.

County Manager Paige Dukes also talked it up from a tourism viewpoint.

The Chairman wanted clarification on what open cut means. Open cut means cut the road open, rather than bore under it. Nobody will be cutting the water or sewer lines.

The County Manager called on Public Works (Robin Cumbus) and EMA (Ashley Tye) to give updates after the heavy rains. There were some road problems and fallen trees, which she expected would be dealt with soon. The county got 4-5 inches of rain according to the river gauges. More rain may come Thursday. Currently, the minor flood may have much of Langdale Park and some of the boat ramps underwater, but most homes are not at risk.

The Chairman joked that if the Chairman and Mayor’s Paddle were held now, “we’d be paddling through the treetops.”
