Five superfund sites and many more supposedly cleaned up, all in Lowndes County.
Homefacts has a web page on Lowndes County, GA Environmental Hazards Report, which includes some you probably knew about, such as Perma Fix Explosion, 1612 James P Rogers Circle, Valdosta, GA 31601,
Perma Fix Explosion is a superfund site located at 1612 James P Rogers Circle, Valdosta, GA 31601. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies sites such as Perma Fix Explosion because they pose or had once posed a potential risk to human health and/or the environment due to contamination by one or more hazardous wastes. Perma Fix Explosion is currently registered as an Active superfund site by the EPA. However, it is not on the NPL (National Priorities List), which means the EPA does not consider it one of the nation’s most hazardous waste sites.
Remember the black clouds of smoke back in August 2013? Well, at least it’s not one of the nation’s most hazardous waste sites….
Others in the Active Non-NPL category are:
- Extol Corporation, 108 Toombs Street, Valdosta, GA 31601
- Southern Bag Company, 910 River Street, Valdosta, GA 31601
- Valdosta Gas Company Atlanta Gas Light, Albetore Lane (abbator Lane), Valdosta, GA 31601 (I’d guess that’s really Abattoir Lane, as in slaughterhouse, which is off of Miller Street south of W. Savannah Avenue, next to the railroad tracks.)
- Itt Thompson Industries Division, 611 James P Rogers Dr, Valdosta, GA 31601
There are at least twice as many classed as “Archived”, such as this other location of one of the above companies, Itt Thompson Industries Div, Clay Rd, Valdosta, GA 31601,
Itt Thompson Industries Div is a superfund site located at Clay Rd, Valdosta, GA 31601. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies sites such as Itt Thompson Industries Div because they pose or had once posed a potential risk to human health and/or the environment due to contamination by one or more hazardous wastes. Itt Thompson Industries Div is currently registered as an Archived superfund site by the EPA and does not require any clean up action or further investigation at this time.
Let’s hope EPA did a better job with all of those than they did with the Seven Out Superfund Site in Waycross.
