Seven minutes, with some discussion about trucks and irrigation of row crops on a liquid waste application site. There was no special presentation, not about the Westside Archives, nor about anything else. They did mention this morning’s Earth Day event again, and added a little bit of detail.
Here’s the agenda with a few notes, and links into the video.

- 3 Trucks — Utility Department
To replace trucks that have gotten too old.
Full size trucks: Langdale Ford $21,893 each Brendon Motor Company $22,775 each
Boom truck; Vendors were asked to bid both a gas and a diesel model: Brendon Motor Company $85,400 gas 93,755 diesel Langdale Ford $89,432 gas $95,782 diesel
Staff recommended the Langdale full size truck bid and the Brendon Motor diesel boom truck bid.Commissioner Demarcus Marshall wanted to know what the boom trucks were for. Utilities Director Mike Allen responded that they were used to pull submersible pumps out of [wastewater] lift stations. Chairman Bill Slaughter further clarified. Commissioner Richard Raines pitched in. Commissioner Marshall said he’d like to see a picture. Utilities addressed the difference between gas and diesel, saying diesel would provide greater longevity and thus better value to the county.
Apparently not only does the public not get to see the Commissioner packets, but those packets don’t even include sufficient information for the Commissioners to understand what they’re supposed to be voting on. And Commissioner Marshall, as he said, works with such trucks in his day job at the City of Valdosta….
- Land Application Site Row Crop Lease
The county spreads liquid waste on a site in the south end of the county, and likes to lease it out for a couple of farming operations. Last month they only got a bid on the haying operation; this time they got bids on for row cropping. Commissioner Richard Raines asked whether “non-irrigated” means it’s not irrigated now, or bidder wouldn’t be allowed to irrigate. Answer from Utilities: they can irrigate, although they’d have to dig their own well.
- Reports-County Manager
Update on Earth Day this morning at 11AM at the Courthouse. at Judge McLane’s request white oak, red oak, and a hickory tree. She didn’t say what species of red or white oak. She said “the media has been invited”. That’s curious: where’s the press release? Commissioner Evans asked if they had to wear their green shirts. Commissioner Marshall wanted to know if everyone got one. Commissioner Powell said Commissioner Raines would model one at that time.
Judge McClane is presumably retired-in-2008 Southern Judicial Circuit Chief Judge H. Arthur McLane, winner in 2011 of the State Bar of Georgia Professionalism Award, currently listed with the Southern Judicial Court as “Senior Judge H. Arthur McLane” (I guess that’s their way of spelling “Emeritus”). A press release could have played up his eminence.
- Citizens Wishing to be Heard Please State Name And Address
That’s only at the Regular Session, which will be 5:30 PM Tuesday evening, when they vote.
They adjourned at 8:37 AM, ending a seven minute session.
