A growing organization of concerned citizens are opposing the building
of a biomass energy plant in Lowndes County.
Wiregrass Activists for Clean Energy hope to promote clean and sustainable
energies while also educating the public on how a biomass plant could
be detrimental to community health.
The goal of the organization and the opposition to the plant is not to
inhibit economic development but to promote a conversation on sustainable
energy, Dr. Michael Noll, WACE president, said.
The new organization is not the only one in the community speaking out
against the biomass plant.
Students Against Violating the Environment,
S.A.V.E. raised their voices in support of the opposition on Oct. 25
by hosting a biomass forum which featured Dr. William Sammons, a
Massachusetts pediatrician, who has taken up the fight in the form of
medical and environmental information, to oppose biomass plants across
the country.
Also, the Valdosta-Lowndes County branch of the NAACP has stated the
location of the plant is a form of environmental racism.

While WACE opposes the biomass plant, the goal of the organization is
to be proactive in finding other ways to provide energy production,
efficiency and conservation within the community.
